Second Episcopal District Bishop Andres-Modest

Bishop Denise Anders-Modest

Rev. Denise Anders-Modest was elected the 65th Bishop of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church at the 39th Session and 40th General Conference on June 29, 2022 held in Cincinnati, Ohio. A native of Ruston, LA, she is the daughter of Mr. Otha and Mrs. Maxine Anders. She was blessed to be married for 20 years to her high school sweetheart, the late Rev. Mitchell G. Modest of Ruston, LA., who passed away March 13, 2022. She is the second female bishop to be elected in the history of the CME Church and the fifth bishop born in the state of Louisiana.

Bishop Anders-Modest is a graduate of Grambling State University in Grambling, LA earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Management/Marketing and a Master of Divinity degree from Phillips School of Theology at the Interdenominational Theological Center (ITC) of Atlanta, GA. She is a lifelong member of the CME Church. She has served 25 years of pastoral ministry in both rural and inner-city churches: Mt. Sinai-Williams Temple CME Church in Colliston, LA; Anderson Chapel CME Church in Holly Springs, MS; The historic Williams Memorial CME Temple in Shreveport, LA and Trinity CME Church in Memphis, TN. Her visionary leadership is transformative and is demonstrated as a pastor to her congregations. A biblical scholar and teacher, she delivers a challenging sermon wherever she preaches. She has impacted congregations and communities wherever she was assigned.

Across the Connection, Bishop Anders-Modest has served for 12 years as the Coordinator for the Commission on the Concerns of Women in Ministry. She has served as a Connectional Board Member, General Conference Delegate, World Methodist Council Delegate, Chair of the Committee on Ministerial Examination, 1st Female Dean in the history of the Louisiana Leadership Training School and a member of the Connectional Youth and Young Adult Conference Planning Team.

The Christian Methodist Episcopal Church is organized into eleven episcopal districts (nine districts in the continental United States and two on the continent of Africa), and has one Bishop who serves as the Ecumenical Officer. Bishop Anders-Modest will serve as the Presiding Prelate of the Second Episcopal District which comprises the Kentucky Region and Ohio-Central Indiana Region.
